I'm currently working at Southern GP Training (GP = General Practitioner – family doctor) in Warrnambool, a medium sized provincial centre on the south west coast of Victoria, Australia.
Ever since I first encountered the CoI, I've thought that social presence, cognitive presence and teacher presence made perfect sense as ways of looking at whether or not people are really 'all there' in online (or offline) teaching and learning situations. My particular area of interest is synchronous communication that is somehow mediated by technology. I used to say 'synchronous online' but in post-graduate medical education in rural Australia, teleconference is a big component, and our doctors often have to depend on POT (plain old telephone) to get reliable voice communication.
