Hi Johnathan
I’m posting on behalf of Dr. Garrison. His reply follows:
Johnathan,
I have not come across this situation. My guess it is largely due to the approach that was taken in this course; specifically a mastery approach. The COI and particularly CP is all about collaborative approaches to learning. Not sure how the mastery approach is congruent with the premise of the COI.
Cheers,
DRGJanuary 8, 2016 at 12:28 am #1217An interesting discussion has coalesced recently (Jan. 2016) on suggestions from other CoI researchers on the need for additional CoI presences. Terry Anderson, one of the original authors of the CoI seminal study and publications, has published his thoughts on additional presences, including “learner presence” and “emotional presence.”
See Terry’s blog on his personal website here: http://virtualcanuck.ca/category/community-of-inquiry/

I’d be interested in participating in a CoI content analysis discussion here. Post away…

April 11, 2014 at 9:40 pm #845Hello Helen
I’m aware that University of Victoria (BC) offers what they term a “multi-access” option. Dr. Valerie Irvine in particular has spearheaded this initiative. You’ll find her blog and papers here: http://edtech.uvic.ca/virvine/

April 11, 2014 at 9:18 pm #844Very interesting post Tony. I’m aware of courses and programs that are structured around the CoI framework, but haven’t heard of any institution-wide initiatives.
Would your institution’s initiative include onsite, online and/or blended contexts?
Here are a few papers that explore CoI-based program developments:

MadelaineDecember 5, 2013 at 11:50 pm #670Hi again Elsa
This is a fairly new site and is one that’s built upon a WordPress template so we’re still figuring out which tools work best and what other attributes members of this community find useful. I’ll add attaching documents to our list of features to investigate.

December 5, 2013 at 6:32 pm #664The purpose of the CoI website is to facilitate on-going discussion about the CoI model by researchers and practitioners working in a respectful, collaborative environment. While the community will be moderated, it’s expected that each member of this community will practice ethical academic integrity and copyright. We welcome lively debate and thoughtful discourse.
In what ways can this website and community help with your work and research?
October 30, 2013 at 5:58 pm #635A very interesting Purdue University Ph.D. dissertation focused on using the CoI Framework is now listed on the CoI Publications collection. See Randrianasolo, S., 2013, Moving online: Using the community of inquiry framework to redesign English composition for international students.
